Tatted Leaf

Here is a leaf pattern I found in Mary E. Fitch's book Tatting Series # 6.

The pattern calls for one shuttle and worked mostly from the backside. This is a great design to practice frontside/backside tatting. Backside tatting requires you begin with the 2nd half of the double stitch instead of the 1st half of the double stitch. It is as simple as 1, 2, 3. All my tatting is done using the frontside/backside tatting method.

Lrg Ring = 3- (x6) 3, CLR

Lrg R = 3 + 3+ 3-(x4)3, CLR, RW

Small Ring = 4- (x3) 4, CLR, + to last picot of lrg ring.

Small Ring = 4+ 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, + to the next picot of lrg ring.

Small Ring = 4+ 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, + to the next picot of lrg ring

Small Ring = 4+ to last picot of prev ring, 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, RW

Very Sm. Ring = 4ds, do not close this ring all the way, RW

Small Ring = 4+ to last picot of prev ring, 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, RW

Very Sm. Ring = 4ds, do not close this ring all the way, RW

Small Ring = 4+ to last picot of prev ring, 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR,

Top Center R = 2 + to last picot of prev. ring 4 -(x3) 4 - 2, CLR

Work opposite side

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, RW

Very Sm. Ring = 4ds, do not close this ring all the way, RW

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, RW

Very Sm. Ring = 4ds, do not close this ring all the way, RW

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, + to 4 picot of lrg ring.

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, + to 5th picot of lrg ring

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 -, 4, CLR, + to 6th picot of lrg ring

Sm Ring = 4+ to last picot of previous ring 4 -, 4 + to 1st picot of 1st small ring , 4, CLR

There should be 6 small rings on each side of the center ring.

  1. I really like this leaf pattern, and the variegated thread really gives it dimension. Thank you for sharing the pattern!

  2. I love the leaves! The color you used is so deep and rich. I can totally picture this as a wreath. A bunch of them tatted up on a styrofoam wreath covered with a solid green ribbon and then embellished with tons of these leaves and red rings for holly berries! I've got to do it...thanks for the pattern! Now to find just the right green thread...LOL...like I need thread! These leaves would even look great turned with the tip at the top to look like a miniature christmas tree on the front of a card....or again, a little holly vignette on the front of a card.

  3. Wild thoughts ran through my head too when I saw this leaf, it would look great as a medallion in a necklace, on my greeting cards, add another sm ring to either side to get a curve in the petal in an arrangement. Oh so many possibilities for such a small little leaf.
